Change Guitar Strings: Best Tips to Get the Job Done!
Changing guitar strings is a pretty common task for guitar players. After using your strings for a while, they become old, worn out, and they may even start to break. If you want the best possible sound from your guitar, you will need to switch up your strings. It’s important to have good quality strings that are in good condition. That’s why it’s also important to know how to change them!
If you follow these steps, you can be sure you’ll have fresh new strings in no time!
Step-by-step Guide
Loosen the strings by turning them counter-clockwise. Remove all the strings and do a cleaning with a damp cloth (not too wet!) around your fretboard, guitar head.
You may be surprised there are dirt and grime! This is the best time to do a thorough wipe. Use a dry cloth to wipe away any excess water if any.
- Make sure you have the right tools on hand
It’s important to have the right tools on hand before you start your string change. Fret not, it is just few things!- A set of new guitar strings
- A pair of scissors/string cutter
- A capo
- A cushion to prop up (optional!)
- Loosen the strings
To loosen the strings, just turn your pegs clock-wise! If you play the string, the pitch will go lower. If it does, you are on the right track! 😀 - Remove all the old strings
Remove the old strings from the tuning peg and remove it from the peg hole on the guitar body with your fingers or pliers. - Put on the new strings
Put on the new string by wrapping around one end of your guitar neck. Use a capo and place it at the 1st fret. It’s role is to secure the strings while you free up your hands to adjust the strings when needed. Turn the peg anti-clockwise until the strings are tightened wound.
* BONUS TIP: If you have a string-winder, it will save you 30% of the time. 😀
