About Hark Music

Our Story…

“Music is a piece of art that goes in the ears straight to the heart.” This timeless adage embodies both founders’, Mr. Amos Teo and Ms Yoong Xin Yun, lifelong passion for music. In 1999, it was this same passion that ignited the sparks of desire in him to establish Hark Music.

Our Students’ Experience

When times are hard, the greatest success stories in life are often created by those who come out fighting.

As a young child, Amos had the desire to learn piano but his parents could not afford it. The then industrious 14-year old relied on his own ability to purchase a musical keyboard, taught himself how to read music, and started performing at school events and music cafes.

However, something was missing. Music was seemingly a reiterative process of reading notes and translating them into keys. How could he express the music in him freely? How could he move people through it? Must we go through the traditional academic path to learn music?

Unravelling the Secret

Often times when you ask someone how they learnt to play by ear, they offer you tips on how to perform a certain technique, but are unable to elucidate the concepts and nuances to achieving their skills.

Not satisfied with the traditional way of learning music, he began to do some “reverse- engineering” on his musical skills. He studied all sorts of music books and unravelled the secret to the myth of playing by ear. Simplifying complexities, the music concepts are converted into easy-to-understand ideas. Further witnessing other musicians with the ability to play any song on the spot without the use of sheet music confirmed his belief that you can learn music in a lot of different ways.

After gaining much practical experience by teaching himself music without following the traditional academic path, he began to convey his experience to all music enthusiasts which led him to develop the SKT (Sense, Knowledge, Technicalities) model. This approach breaks down the skills needed to play and understand music into simple and achievable learning steps.

Through a chance encounter with Xin Yun during a music performance, their shared passion for music and common vision led to the blossoming of a lasting partnership, and the establishment of a remarkable business over the years.
