5 Steps to Learning Piano
Playing pop music on the piano can be a fun and rewarding experience, but it can be challenging to learn without sheet music. Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to learning pop piano skills with no scores.
Here are five steps to get you started:
1. Start With Basic Piano Chords
Pop music often relies heavily on basic chord progressions, so it’s important to master these first. Learn the major and minor chords for each note on the keyboard and practice transitioning smoothly between them. You can find chord charts and tutorials online to help you get started.
2. Listen To Pop Songs On Piano
One of the best ways to learn pop piano without scores is to listen to pop songs that you enjoy and try to pick out the chord progressions and melodies by ear. Pay attention to the rhythm, tempo, and structure of the song. You can also find online tutorials and videos that break down popular songs and show you how to play them.
3. Practice Playing Along
Once you have identified the chords and melody of a song, try playing along with the recording. Start with simple songs and gradually work your way up to more complex pieces. This will help you develop your ear and improve your timing and rhythm.
At Hark, we developed PlayAlong™ Tracks hosted in HarkLearners’ Portal where you can access to practice, at your own time, your pace. The songs are arranged in the basic keys (e.g. C key, G Key) for beginners. And best, you can even adjust the speed!

4. Experiment With Different Rhythms
Pop music often features a variety of rhythms and beats, so don’t be afraid to experiment and try out different patterns. Start with simple rhythms and gradually build up to more complex ones. You can find tutorials and resources online that teach you different rhythm patterns and techniques.
5. Create Your Own Piano Arrangements
Once you have a good understanding of basic chords, melody, and rhythm, start creating your own arrangements of pop songs. Experiment with different chord progressions, rhythms, and melodies to create your own unique interpretations of popular tunes. Remember to record yourself and listen back to identify areas for improvement.
Learning pop piano without scores can be challenging, but it’s also a great way to develop your ear and improvisation skills.
With practice and dedication, you can learn to play your favorite pop songs on the piano with confidence and style. So go ahead and start experimenting with different chords, rhythms, and melodies today!
